Mod Mischief

Don't you just hate it when you think you have a great original idea and then you find out someone has done it already (and a million times better than you could)? Bade Stageberg Cox via AT Chris and I routinely pass great chairs left at the curb, and I've often told him that I would love to collect them, fix them up and paint them all a pretty colour. Each chair of the week would be unique but also a cohesive part of the bigger project. But of course it would have to wait for when we had a house, and a workshop, and were no longer plagued by neighbours who scream at us when we try to spray paint outside... Bade Stageberg Cox is clearly not held back by any of my problems as their Street Seats project is exactly what I wish I could do;  fifty chairs rescued from the trash, all given a fun makeover and new lease on life.

I love the Great Glebe Garage Sale . In terms of exciting annual events, it's right up there with Christmas (although nowhere close to Halloween ). We got off to a bit of a late start, but Chris and I still managed to find some real treasures to bring home in the little red wagon. Cute blue retro luggage set that looks mostly unused. Cost: $15 for all 4 pieces Funky old film reels ($1 for both!), a felt hat ($1.50) and a wooden frame for silk screening (50 cents). Military badges ($5), a glass dome ($2) and a cute bottle (50 cents). Speakers for the stereo a friend very generously gave to us a few months ago ($35). Finally, a tulip table base for only $10! We need a bar height table for the kitchen, so this piece is too short to use as-is, but I'm sure we can come up with a way to make it work. I'm glad we didn't have as far of a walk as last year , it was quite a load for our little wagon!

I love delicious, fair trade, organic and locally run coffee. Before today I wouldn’t have thought it was possible to like Bridgehead any more than I already do. Then I walked into the new Sparks Street location. Eames chairs! OMG! Yeah, they’re the cheaper Modernica versions and not the officially licensed Herman Miller chairs , but they’re still so sexy. And orange, you gotta love the orange!

The previous tenants left us their dining table. The Ikea Ingo table wasn't quite what Chris and I wanted for the kitchen, but we decided it would be perfect as a coffee table. Inspired by Will Means' nightstand and  several octopus tables, we set out to give the Ingo table new life. We sanded it and cut down the legs. Chris put together a stencil image in photoshop and we printed it off and laid it out on the table. We cut the stencil out of acetate and painted around the edges. Then we painted the whole thing a sexy black. Finally we peeled off the stencil and gave it a shiny coat of polyurethane. The finished kraken table!

I love the playful furniture by Straight Line Designs featured in the Globe and Mail . The anthropomorphic pieces remind me of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast and The Sorcerer's Apprentice . I am even more impressed with the Judson Beaumont’s company now that I know they are responsible for my all time favourite airport playground. Straight Line Designs created the adorable garden maze I have spent many an hour admiring in the Vancouver International Airport.

Ottawa is expected to get 30 cm of snow today. from This Old House Naturally, I'm daydreaming about green things growing again. If I ever own a lawn, I'm so going to make a lawn living room set. There's a cool design for a literal lawn chair here . Just think of the possibilities...

If only I had a spare bathtub kicking around... and room to use it as a sofa. Terribly expensive, but oh-so-cool. I can't imagine it would be too hard to do if you had the right tools.
