Pickles and Ice Cream

Chris and I have exciting news to share: we're having a baby! It's a little unexpected (turns out it only takes once!), but we're really excited about this new adventure. Unfortunately, my pregnancy hasn't been much fun yet. They really shouldn't call it morning sickness when I'm nauseous and vomiting all day and night. At least this part should be over soon!

Spring in the Yukon

Image
Spring has arrived here in Whitehorse. The snow has melted and the weather has been absolutely gorgeous for the last few weeks. Watching the swans on Marsh Lake Spring in the Yukon means swans. Hundreds of honking swans. Chris and I went to Swan Haven on Marsh Lake over the long weekend and the official swan count was over 990! My wingspan = about the same as a swan! Chris doing his best bird impersonation Spring also means that it's the perfect time for BBQ. I got Chris a barbecue for his birthday this month and  he couldn't be happier. When it's t-shirt weather in April, it feels like we should be cooking every meal outside!

Adventures in House Hunting

Image
I wrote a post about our hunt for a home for Offbeat Home & Life . After years of searching, it's so nice to finally have a place we love and can make our own. You can read the Offbeat Home story here . You might also like to see what we've done to the place since moving in. Here's a little updated house tour I posted back in March.

Missing PromDemonium

Image
For the first time since 2008, it's Prom night and I'm not there. I wish I could be in Ottawa, dancing up a storm with all the Promdemonium people! Since I can't be there in person, I'm getting my prom fix by looking at past photos and following all the happenings on twitter/facebook/instagram. 2008 wall flowers 2009 cutest couple? 2010 working the coat check 2011 sequins and top hats It's such a fun event. Maybe I can convince some folks to start up a Yukon version? 2012

Updated House Tour

Image
We had guests over the other night, so since the house was relatively clean Chris and I thought it would be a good idea to film another little video tour.  We've still got a long way to go, but it's starting to feel a little more like home. Major renovations are still a long way off, but we have got some things done: -we painted the living room and bathroom, -we replaced the broken bathroom tap and rusted out sink, and because the green sink we took out wasn't a standard size, we had to swap out the counter top too, -we removed the rotted wood around the bathtub (ultimately we're going to move the tub and get rid of all the cedar in the bathroom but we're not there yet), and -we fixed the leaking toilet and converted it to dual flush. Chris is almost done drafting the big changes we've got planned, so expect lots more progress.

Black Rock City here we come!

They sold out in only 45 minutes, but we got our tickets to Burning Man 2014! I can't wait to go home again! We had such a great time on the playa in 2012.

Vending machines are heavy

Image
Work has been keeping me really busy. I spent most of January either traveling or working overtime late into the night, so there hasn't been much of an opportunity for crafts or home improvements. But Chris and I are still slowly making this house feel more like home. While searching for furniture on kijiji I came across this fantastic vintage vending machine. Somehow I convinced Chris that we should buy it. So we bought it and then we were faced with the problem of getting it into our house. It turns out that vending machines are very heavy. So heavy in fact, we couldn't get it up the stairs. Fortunately Chris came up with a clever way to to get it into the house. With two winches we were able to pull the machine up the stairs. Once we had it on the deck, we got it standing again with the help of a car jack. We broke our 500 lb hand truck trying to wheel it the rest of the way, but we finally got it inside! Now to stock it with beer...
