Happy Valentines Day!

Happy Valentine's Day from CBC North! #Yukon pic.twitter.com/vs05avAjSU — CBC North (@CBCNorth) February 14, 2017 I hope you are having a fabulous Valentine's Day (or an equally awesome Singles Awareness Day ). Chris and I recently designed a fun little project for YuKonstruct's Valentines craft party . Inspired by some other little Operation games, we made a laser-cut version. I'm especially proud of the arms, which interlock to keep the candies in the game if you're giving it as a gift. Check out the full instructable .

Winterval 2016

Image
YuKonstruct was invited to build an art installation for Winterval this year. The theme for the event was "festival of lights" so Chris and I volunteered to build lanterns for the parade. We filmed a fun video of the process with 1 second everyday . We haven't been spending as much time at the makerspace lately, so it was really nice to be back working on a community project. Axel loves helping build things!

Life lately

So the big news is that we won the Instructables Makerspace Contest ! After our second summer of making things like crazy, it's so wonderful that YuKonstruct (pretty much our second home) gets to take home the grand prize of a new laser cutter and other great stuff. Since the contest has wrapped up, Chris and I have been working on preparations for Axel's birthday party. And people wonder why we still haven't finished the kitchen renovation... #weregonnaneedalotoffeathers A photo posted by Allison (@modmischief) on Sep 10, 2016 at 2:07pm PDT

We're at it again...

Image
Last year I challenged myself to write an instructable every day during the month of June for the Instructables Makerspace Contest . YuKonstruct narrowly missed out on the big prizes last time , so this year we're after redemption! While I haven't been completely successful at publishing a new instructable every day this month, I have managed to get 12 personal projects featured . I'm most proud of finally doing an instructable for our wedding invitations ! If you have a chance, please vote for them in the Wedding Contest ! Steampunk Ball 2016

Image
Last year, the theme for the Sourdough Rendezvous was "the future is now" and the organizers decided that, in keeping with the theme, the annual ball would be a steampunk ball. The Steampunk Ball was such a huge success, the organizers decided to do it again this year. While YuKonstruct helped with decorations last year, the makerspace's only contribution was laser cutting gears out of cardboard. This time around, Rendezvous approached YuKonstruct to design and build some really impressive steampunk props. Chris and I jumped at the opportunity to build some epic steampunk decor. Chris designed an airship and porthole photobooth backdrop in SketchUp and then we built them with the help of several YuKonstruct and Yukon Comic Culture Society volunteers. Another YuKonstruct member made an awesome jacob's ladder and incredible compass rose for the stage. A video posted by Allison (@modmischief) on Feb 26, 2016 at 11:17pm PST It was a ...

Fall flew by

Image
We've settled in for winter here in Whitehorse, under a beautiful blanket of fresh snow. People are already preparing for Christmas, so I figured I should get around to sharing some Halloween photos. Chris, Axel and I all got sick with a bad stomach flu shortly after Axel's party , so we ended up scrapping our plans for epic costumes this year. Fortunately, there's no shortage of costumes around here, so we were still able to dress up (in multiple outfits!) On the big night, we all dressed in matching flight suits and aviator sunglasses, for a whole family of Top Guns. Not the epic costumes I had originally planned, but I think we'll look pretty good as Top Guns A photo posted by Allison (@modmischief) on Oct 31, 2015 at 4:03pm PDT YuKonstruct hosted Halloween craft night which was a lot of fun. 2015 Axel has grown a lot since his first YuKonstruct workshop a year earlier ! 2014

So many instructables...

Image
When I set myself the challenge of writing an instructable every day this month , I don't think I fully appreciated how much time it would take to not just write the instructables, but actually make the things that I would be writing instructions for. I also didn't fully grasp yet how little free time I would have now that I'm back to work. While I didn't quite meet my goal, I did write a lot of instructables and helped give YuKonstruct an early lead in the Makerspace Contest . I've also worked on several projects that, while not instructables yet, will soon be ready to become instructables. Here's what did get published this month, many of these projects are entered in contests, so I would appreciate your votes! Instructables Challenge

Image
Instructables is hosting an epic makerspace contest with over $30,000 in prizes. The contest is all about quantity (the makerspace with the most instructables published between June 1 and August 31 wins) so I've decided to publish as many instructables as I can this summer. This month I'm challenging myself to publish one instructable every day. It is a great opportunity to finally push myself to write up a bunch of projects I've had kicking around for ages. I'll be publishing my personal projects as ModMischief and I'll also be writing up group projects for YuKonstruct - so you can follow both accounts to see all the instructables. I'm off to a good start having just published two instructables in the last two days: Discord Horns from InstaMorph InstaMorph & Craft Foam Stamps

Valentines

How is it the end of March already? I thought I'd finally share some instructables I worked on back in February. Angler Fish Valentine YuKonstruct hosted a Valentines Craft Night and I created a few fun cards with conductive ink and LEDs. Firefly Card

Tiny Top Hat

Image
babies look adorable in top hats Last week I made a tiny top hat and covered it in sound-reactive LEDs. For the most part I followed instructions from Offbeat Bride to make a mini cardboard top hat.   Then I covered the hat in black silk. I didn't actually realize the shirt I was using was real silk until after I had already started cutting it up. I found it at the free store and had assumed that it was cheap polyester. Now I have a little silk top hat! There was a bunch of leftover copper tape and little LED stickers from the Christmas card craft night at YuKonstruct , so I decided to use some to decorate the hat. With the chibitronics effects and sensor stickers I was able to get the lights to fade on and off and to light up in reaction to noise.   I've posted the full step by step instructions for making the mini top hat on instructables .   Originally I was making the hat to wear to the Rendezvous Steampunk Ball , but now I've got an even...
