One Month

Image
It's hard to believe that Axel is a month old today. He was due to arrive tomorrow! Inspired by Young House Love and Making It Lovely , I've been taking Axel's picture every week. He's started to grow so fast! Over the last week he's been putting on over an ounce every day. His clothes are still all too big, but at this rate he'll be filling them out in no time

Offbeat Bride!

Our wedding was featured on Offbeat Bride today ! Offbeat Bride has been my favourite wedding blog since long before Chris and I decided to get married, so I'm beyond excited to have our wedding profiled. It's always interesting to see which photos the editors chose and what they cut. Here are some of my favourite parts that didn't make it into the post: - Our Claptrap card box which I posted about building here ,  here and here . -The nerf battles! I think everyone should bring nerf guns to their weddings. -The etched glasses. To avoid both disposable glassware and doing the dishes post-wedding, we bought thrift store glassware for all the guests and, with a lot of help from a temporary sweatshop in my parents' hotel room, etched them all with our wedding designs so guests could take them home as souvenirs. -High five! We snuck in a high five before kissing and exiting the ceremony and I didn't even miss Chris' hand!

Next time you're in the market for a photo book

Image
Remember how we set up a photo booth for our friend's party ? Well, we ordered a photo book with all the pictures as a gift for Andrea and I'm super happy with the results. The packaging is adorable and they even included a cute gift card so we can give a friend a free book I heard about My Publisher on Young House Love , and with such great reviews I figured it was worth trying out. They did not disappoint!  Setting up the book was super easy and the prices were very reasonable. Best of all, it arrived just a few days later and looks fantastic. Everything is very high quality and the photos turned out great (even though many weren't that good to start with).  Check out the fancy vellum pages and lining! In case you're reading this Andrea, I'm sorry if I ruined the surprise but I figure you probably over heard me at the party, telling everyone they had to get their photo taken because I was making you a book! This wasn't sponso...

Elsewhere on the Internets

Image
Instructables recently made me a featured author and I'm incredibly honoured to be joining the ranks of some of the best makers around. Wilgubeast asked me about everything from my lack of formal training to my penchant for collecting spare body parts. You can read the full interview here . If that wasn't enough to give me a huge ego, my post about calling 911 was featured on Offbeat Home this week! Speaking of our recent scare... It's nowhere near as pretty a collection as the photos on http://theburninghouse.com/ but if you're wondering what Chris and I would grab if the house was on fire, this is what we actually had with us while sitting on the sidewalk in our pajamas. cat carrier (Simone was actually in it at the time) Juniper and Potato the cordless phone I used to call 911 my purse our laptops (neither of which are really worth anything beyond the priceless photos they contain) a hat from the Bay - I picked it up to grab my purse and didn't ...

Missing my rats

Nim just the other day Sadly Nim passed away yesterday.  The apartment seems much emptier without my rats. Update: Thank you to everyone for all the well wishes and to Kim for posting the photo of Nim on desire to inspire .

How to save £20 on vinyl bookends

Image
Retro To Go posted about these bookends made from vinyl records being sold at Urban Outfitters . If you like the look but would rather not spend the £20, you can make your own in 5 minutes.  It's as simple as dipping the record in boiling water and bending it to the right shape. I've made a full how-to over on instructables .

Is the meat garnish catching on?

Image
Chris and I decided to try out The Exchange the other day. After several hours of shopping, we were in need of some drinks. Chris ordered their ceasar. Yes, that's a piece of meat nestled between the cucumber and jalapeno. I think it was peperoni. Does this mean that meat garnishes are catching on? How long before I can order a McNuggetini from Ottawa's finer establishments? I'm not going to lie, I totally have a huge girl crush on Alie and Georgia . But especially Georgia .

Love this

Way back when, inspired by the awesomeness of this and this , I started cutting butterflies out of records. They looked awesome and I had plans to have them flying up the walls of the Hoos, but cutting them out with a hot knife was extremely tedious and with everything else going on, the project got dumped into a box at the back of a closet. After seeing these gorgeous photos , I might just have to dig them out again! via Design*Sponge & Style Me Pretty

Light of My Life

Inspired by the tutorial on Design*Spong e , I made Chris a little Valentines gift with a steampunk twist. Baby, you can turn me on... Also on Instructables

Grey skies and rainbows

Image
We painted the living room this weekend. I was really worried when the colour was going up on the walls because it looked so dark, but it lightened up a lot as it dried and I'm very happy with it now. When putting my records back into our expedit, I decided to organize them by colour. Some people don't like the recent trend of bookshelves arranged by colour , but  I rather like the look of it. Since these are the records I paint on and not the ones I would like to listen to, I don't need to worry about finding a specific one. Besides, Tavi likes things sorted by colour and that 13 year old is way cooler than I'll ever be.

Guest posting on My Disguises

Manny of MyDisguises.com asked me to post about some of my favourite costumes. You can check out my first guest post here . If your looking for all my posts about costumes on this blog, you can find them here .

Can you feel the love tonight?

Image
Wow. As if winning a prize in the Instructables Halloween Contest wasn't enough, Manny over at My Disguises has written a post about my costumes that has me positively blushing. Add the fact that Chris bought me flowers yesterday for no reason, and I'm feeling very loved. Thank you to everyone who voted for my costumes on instructables.com and to Manny for saying such nice things about me! If you're interested in seeing all my blog posts about my costumes, you can find them here .

The remains of analog media

Image
The work of Brian Dettmer just blew my mind. via Re-nest & designboom I'm currently working on a tape cassette project, but it's not nearly this cool.

Precious indeed

Image
I want this dress . The Hitchcock by Suzabelle , over at Victoire Maybe I've been watching too much Mad Men , but I feel like my new promotion calls for some retro-inspired business clothes. Let's just ignore the fact that my current wardrobe took 7 suitcases and 3 big boxes to move into the new place...

Something to do with all those extra records?

Image
How bizarre is it that I was just thinking about how layered records would make a great scale effect when this popped up in my google reader? Street art by JAXPAC (jacksonville public art coalition) via Wooster Collective

Hot or Not? Totally hot.

My little melon is making the rounds. That's my hand pouring delicious spiked watermelon juice on Apartment Therapy’s green page, Re-nest . This is probably the closest I’ll ever come to having my apartment featured on AT .

They like me, they really like me

Image
In my inbox today: Hi! Your Instructable " Tap a Watermelon! or How to Make a Watermelon Keg " was just featured by one of our editors! Look for it on the Instructables homepage within the next 30 minutes. Being featured means we think you are awesome. Keep up the great work! http://www.instructables.com/ Yup, there it is. My little watermelon keg is on the front page.

A hutch to live up to his name

Image
With a name like Eames , how could this adorable bunny have anything other than a stylish hutch? I love this ikea hack by Nicole at designcuriosities (found via Design*Sponge ). Tiling the bottom is brilliant. While spacious, Nim and Noi’s current cage isn’t very stylish. Especially now that I’ve had to cover some sections with wire mesh and twist ties as they’ve discovered how to break out between some of the wider spaced bars. I would love to give the girls something this cool.

Oh hai!

Image
Chris spent at least an hour last night showing me his favourite posts on cute overload . I like a man who is secure enough in his masculinity to enjoy looking at pictures of fluffy kittens. In honour of all that is cute, here are some pics of Nim and Noi enjoying their new cage . Last weekend, Chris and I took some steel wool and a lot of elbow grease to the GGGS find and the girls moved in on Sunday. Their old cage is now making some other rats happy through the wonders of freecycle . By the way, that adorable little house was only $3 at Giant Tiger!
