Space Prom!

Image
We managed to time a trip to Ottawa to line up with PromDemonium this year! It was so great to be able to attend, especially after missing out last year . The organizers did an amazing job and picked an epic theme: Space Prom . It's a 19+ event, so Axel couldn't attend, but we dressed him up in his tuxedo anyways so he wouldn't feel too left out. This year's theme inspired some really awesome costumes. The Glebe Community Centre was packed with dancing astronauts and aliens! Photo from PromDemonium Photobooth I found my crazy sequined ballroom dancing gown at Value Village for $13 when we were down in BC. It's so long I had to wear heels to keep it from dragging on the ground. A friend from YuKonstruct gave me some blue EL wire which I wore on my arms, but sadly I forgot to bring spare batteries and it died before we had even finished our volunteer shift at coat check. I made my ringed planet fascinator hat out of a styrofoam ball, clear acrylic...

Halloween in July

Image
Last night Chris and I went to Wonder Geeks Activate's Halloween in July event. I love any chance to dress up! I got this dress on sale after last Halloween It was too hot to wear our big costumes, but it was a great opportunity to put together outfits we've never worn before. Admiral Chris There were lots of great costumes there. I didn't get pictures of the winners of the costume contest, but I did snap some photos of a few of my favourites. This time traveler makes jewellery   My favourite costume at the party - so awesome! and the girl wearing it was super sweet It took this guy 4 weeks to weave that chainmail shirt He let me try out his sword!

Bluesfest 2013

Image
We volunteered again this year at Bluesfest. With me being gone up north for part of it, Chris not feeling well and all the wedding stuff we have to do, we didn't see as many shows as we have in the past, but we still had a great time. This year was especially bittersweet because it will likely be our last. Photo from DigitalLounge.ca Previous posts: Bluesfest 2012 Bluesfest 2011 Bluesfest 2010 Bluesfest 2009

Oysterfest 2013

Image
Happy Canada Day! Yesterday Chris and I took in the Whalesbone 's  hipsterfest Oysterfest. The fish burgers and oysters were just as delicious as last year ! I didn't get any pictures of it, but my favourite part of the night was when the fire performers started doing their thing on the roof. All summer events are better with fire.

Doors Open Ottawa

Image
This year for Doors Open Chris and I volunteered at the Diefenbunker. They had some people cancel at the last minute so we offered to help with the BBQ. Saturday was a beautiful day and we had a great time. The bunker was a popular stop for Doors Open, they had over 3000 people walk through over the weekend!

Great Glebe Garage Sale-ing

Image
The Great Glebe Garage Sale was today. In what must surely be a record for us, we spent a grand total of $3.50! We left the little red wagon at home this year and took a vintage pram we found on freecycle instead. We were hoping to buy a bunch of glasses but we went home with just 2 small tvs and a single water goblet.

Cinco de Mayo

Image
On Friday I went to Spins & Needles ' Cinco de Mayo Pinata Party with our friend Jess. As always, it was a lot of fun! When I brought home the pinata I made, Chris was pretty excited about smashing it. So smash it he did.

Ottawa Vintage Clothing Sale - Spring edition!

Image
Chris and I went to the Ottawa Vintage Clothing Show today. It's awesome that they've turned it into a more-than-once-a-year event! While I'm still a little nostalgic for the days when the sale was at the Chateau Laurier, the organizers did a much better job setting things up in the convention centre this time around. There was a better layout, it was easier to navigate between stalls and, without the sun in our eyes , we could actually see the clothing we were trying to buy! We were a little disappointed that there seemed to be fewer vendors with the menswear and military stuff Chris and I tend to gravitate towards, but we still found some great pieces. There are two schools of thought when it comes to dressing for the vintage clothing sale: you can either put on your best vintage clothes in the hopes of impressing all the fashionistas, or you can opt to wear skin-tight spandex so you can try things on without needing to use the crowded, and not terribly private,...

Happy Valentine's Day!

Image
It's hard to beat last year's Valentine's Day but today was pretty awesome. First, some of my  colleagues at work got me chocolates and balloons. Chris insisted we wear the photobooth pirate hats Then Chris took me to the Diefenbunker for dinner and a movie. While sitting at a table with strangers in a cafeteria 75 feet underground might not sound terribly romantic, it was a lot of fun. I think my favourite part was the delicious chocolates from the Swan at Carp . Who knew the radioactive symbol could look so cute?

Everyone's a Winner

Image
January's Spins and Needles event was a lot of fun! Pressed is a great venue for that sort of thing and this month's project was the perfect combination of easy and awesome. Chris wasn't able to make it because he wasn't feeling well, so I made him his own felt pennant to cheer him up.

It's the end of the world as we know it...

Image
It's December 21, 2012 and we're still here. The world appears to have not ended, or at least it hasn't ended yet. Last night we went to the Bear's Apocalypse-apalooza party at the the Diefenbunker. If the apocalypse had happened at midnight, at least we would have had spandex clad women to protect us.

Ottawa Vintage Sale 2012

Image
The Ottawa Vintage Sale had new organizers and a new location this year. And a new name too, it's now the   Ottawa Vintage Clothing Show . While I wasn't thrilled about the location (it's hard to compete with the Chateau Laurier), the vendors and selection of vintage clothes were as awesome as always. We saw some incredible pieces, like that amazing jacket with brass epaulettes, and Chris and I went home with a full military uniform for him and a sailor sweater for me.

Ottawa Zombie Walk 2012

Image
Photo by Ming Wu We had a great time at the Ottawa Zombie Walk this year! The damp, overcast weather just made it that much creepier. As I mentioned in my last post , I wore a $10 thrifted wedding dress, and Chris dressed as a groom. I made the most of my current haircut by creating an exposed brain latex prosthetic , with the help of a brain shaped jello mold. engagement photo?

Zombie Movie Night at the Diefenbunker

Image
Tuesday night we went to the Diefenbunker for their screening of Dawn of the Dead (the remake, unfortunately, but still good). I love that a museum, and especially such a cool museum, is embracing the zombie craze. You might remember that the Diefenbunker is actually part of our zombie survival plan. Photo from the Diefenbunker Blog In addition to the movie, they were holding a zombie costume contest, so naturally, we dressed the part. Photo from the  Diefenbunker Blog After the film, we had fun taking pictures with our friends. Oh no! Zombies have broken into the bunker! Is nowhere safe? There's no stopping them! So much for the survivors.... Big thanks to Jess Aylsworth for these awesome photos!

Ottawa Mini Maker Fair

Image
Last weekend we went to the Ottawa Mini Maker Faire . It was great getting to meet so many interesting local artists and talking to them about what they do. One of my favourite maker booths was the one belonging to artist and fabricator Ian Langohr . Ian makes incredible masks out of foam. I hope they do more events like this in the future!
