Mod Mischief

Last January I made a resolution to "stop complaining about it, fix it" - while it seemed like a great idea at the time, it backfired big time. Trying to do everything myself just isn't sustainable. After learning that lesson the hard way, I've come up with the following resolutions for 2017: Set limits and start saying no (even if I want to do everything) Document the awesome stuff that is  happening in my life Take time to focus on home Setting Limits I want to do everything. When there are potentially cool projects happening at the makerspace I want to lead them all. I want to MAKE ALL THE THINGS! I can't. Not while working full time and looking after a toddler. This has been a hard lesson, but by scaling back on which projects I take on I hope to really focus on doing fewer things really well. Axel's first time skating 2016 is almost behind us. It's been a tough year for many, but we've been lucky to have some pretty great memories from the past 12 months. With Axel it seems like every week is full of exciting new firsts. Making gingerbread cookies in Oma's kitchen We enjoyed some time with family over the holidays, baking cookies, playing in the snow and eating so much delicious food. Thinking ahead to 2017 is a little daunting, but we're ending 2016 on a high note that I hope will carry us through.

YuKonstruct was invited to build an art installation for Winterval this year. The theme for the event was "festival of lights" so Chris and I volunteered to build lanterns for the parade. We filmed a fun video of the process with 1 second everyday . We haven't been spending as much time at the makerspace lately, so it was really nice to be back working on a community project. Axel loves helping build things!

On Halloween night, when we were sure all the trick-or-treaters were done for the evening, we took down all our spooky decorations and finished packing our bags so we could head to BC first thing in the morning. Axel making the most of Victoria's Halloween selfie stations I was going to be working in Victoria for two weeks and, since the hotel room was already paid for, Axel and Chris decided to join me for a little escape from the Yukon winter. Vancouver Island was lovely compared to the cold and snow in Whitehorse, but Axel was not a fan of the rain.

This ol' blog of mine feels pretty neglected of late. It's not that we haven't been doing much, it's just that I haven't been finding the time to write about it. Despite it being long overdue, I thought I should share some photos from Halloween. This was Axel's first time trick-or-treating and getting into the spirit of Halloween. We read a lot of Halloween books and watched a bunch of Halloween kids specials on Netflix leading up to the big day, so when it came time to hit the streets, he knew exactly what to do. It was adorable, seeing him so excited to knock on doors and hold out his candy bucket. We wanted to make the most of the giant bird we had on hand, so we went with a cursed jungle decoration theme to work in Kevin. We put up our Teal Pumpkin Project signs at the start of the month, in the hopes that it would help attract more trick-or-treaters, but we still only got 5 kids at our door on Halloween night. Axel's second birthday party was this weekend and it was a lot of fun! *evil villain laughter* Our little guy is crazy about balloons, so we went with an Up themed party. We built an almost-full-sized Kevin (the bird from the movie) for the photobooth and laser cut felt wilderness explorer badges for all the guests. In addition to a bunch of helium balloons, we filled a play pen with balloons for a little ball pit that was a huge hit. The goody bags were filled will little tubs of playdoh, Up finger puppets , balloons and chocolates (Kevin's favourite treat). For food, we served hot dogs (like Russell gets on the Spirit of Adventure), cake by Klondike Cakes ,   jello sky parfaits , fruit, veggies and other snacks. We were so impressed by how our friends really got into the theme and enjoyed the photobooth!

So the big news is that we won the Instructables Makerspace Contest ! After our second summer of making things like crazy, it's so wonderful that YuKonstruct (pretty much our second home) gets to take home the grand prize of a new laser cutter and other great stuff. Since the contest has wrapped up, Chris and I have been working on preparations for Axel's birthday party.
