Wedding Wednesday: Save the Date Cards
Chris and I are in full wedding planning mode.
After he proposed, we got off to a bit of a slow start; we had so many ideas it was hard to narrow it all down to one cohesive plan. It's not often you get an excuse to plan such a big party so we both want it to be the best party we could possibly throw!
But over the last few months, things have started to come together. We set a date, booked a venue, started our guestlist, interviewed photographers and commenced work on some of the decorations.
Now that we've got the ball rolling, I thought it would be good to blog about our progress. Not only will it give me an opportunity to share our diy projects, but it will hopefully also help keep me on track.
So, without further ado, I give you the very first Wedding Wednesday* post:
Our plan was to send out Save the Dates as our holiday cards this year, so the pressure was on to come up with something at least as awesome as last year's mechanical iris cards.
We're still working out how it will all fit together but, for the moment, we're calling our theme "post-apocalyptic carnival" and we wanted to express both the circus and end of the world concepts with the cards.
I sketched out two rats with tails that make a heart shape together.
We went with rats because
1) we love our pet rats (obviously)
2) we like street art and it's a bit of a nod to Banksy and
3) they will surely survive the apocalypse (and are way cuter than cockroaches!)
Chris traced out my sketches on the computer and worked out how to make them into a stand up 3D card. We were inspired by a corporate xmas card he got a few years ago (it looked like this) and really liked the idea that people could keep our cards out on display.
We sized the card to fit flat into envelopes we already had because we bought them in bulk a few years ago.
I made the concrete wall background image and the design on the back of the card in photoshop. To give the rats a bit more character, we added a top rat to one and a little lace tutu to the other. The eyes were made with a tiny drop of glossy black puff paint.
We planned on sending out the cards in December to everyone on our Christmas card list, but unfortunately the paper cutter we ordered arrived much later than we were told it would. We finally got all the cards in the mail a few weeks ago and it's been great hearing the responses from the folks who've recieved them.
Now we just have to come up with an even better idea for the formal invitations!
If you'd like to make some rats in love cards of your own, don't worry! I'm working on an instructable that should be up before valentine's day.
*I'm very tempted to shorten the title to "Weddingnesday" à la Zoë
